ACURA is a collegial association that brings together professionals working in higher education to support pluralistic, inclusive approaches to claiming the role of religion, spirituality, and ethical identity in colleges and universities. Members include Deans, Directors, and Chaplains of various roles; large research universities and small liberal arts colleges; and leaders of a wide range of religious, spiritual, and ethical traditions. What we hold in common is a commitment to work within the structures of higher education to engage issues of meaning in the lives of the whole college.
Our ethos is inspired by a document we created at Princeton University in 2005, a collection of basic principles for the function of religious, spiritual, and ethical leadership in higher education:
Nurturing the religious and spiritual life of students is a critical part of the mission of higher education in the 21st century. Our colleges and universities are explicitly committed to developing the whole person, creating global citizens, and promoting civic engagement of students throughout their lives. Finding one’s own spiritual, religious and moral compass is a key component of personal well being in adult life.
